Google spam head Matt Cutts confirmed the latest and major penguin update called as Google Penguin  2.0, which took place late Wednesday afternoon on May 22, 2013. I called it latest because last Google Penguin  updates was in Oct. 5, 2012 and after that it took place on May 22, 2013 and major because it affected some major brands like Educational Testing Service, Dish.com, the Salvation Army and CheapOair.

This fourth Penguin-related launch had big impact on web spam. Unlike earlier updates this new generation penguin update had really big impact on small things and got deeper. Updates like Penguin 2 or Penguin 3 affected less than 0.1% and 0.3% of queries respectively but Penguin 4 affected 2.3% of English queries. SearchMetrics have shared list of 25 sites, which got affected with this penguin update. This list of sites includes some major brands (which I mentioned in last paragraph), game sites and some other sites.

Some SEO expert do not count this update as big as it was declared by Matt Cutts but there is no doubt that it affected some major brands which were doing well in the market for past few years. So it is not big for those who didnÔÇÖt get affected but it is really big for those who got hit by Google Penguin 2.0. Earlier to rollout this update Matt Cutts detailed that this going to target black hat SEO, but it would have significantly larger impact on spam than the earlier Penguin and subsequent Penguin updates have had in past.

ItÔÇÖs been just 2 days that this update has happened, it is possible that there will be some more information in coming days describing what have been affected, what kind of SEO got targeted and what to take care in future to protect site from affects of Pandas or Penguins.
